Institut National des Sciences Appliquées Lyon
INSA Lyon is France’s leading post-baccalaureate engineering school. It welcomes a wide variety of profiles among the best baccalaureate (A level) holders in France. INSA Lyon also has several multidisciplinary groups of researchers working on different fields: energy for a sustainable development, environment, digital Society and Information, Global Health and Bioengineering and transport.
INSA Lyon is involved in the project through the laboratory LaMCoS and the laboratory Mateis.
INSA Lyon - LaMCoS
LaMCoS (Laboratoire de Mécanique des Contacts et des Structures) is a research laboratory whose main goal is to predict and control the performance and integrity of mechanical systems both static and dynamic, from the component or constituent to the complete system. It thus aims to understand and predict the performance and integrity of mechanical systems (industrial or « natural »).
In its current configuration, the LaMCoS laboratory employs around 200 people, making it a major unit in its discipline. It is organized into 6 research teams, 1 research support team and 2 transverse operations. Its activities are at the heart of INSIS, while also developing frontier activities. Each research team has dual competencies in experimentation, modeling and simulation. The LaMCoS has been developing research activities for over 20 years in the field of « Living Mechanics », with a particular focus in recent years on the treatment of vascular and articular pathologies. Computer-aided vascular and joint navigation is an important activity within the laboratory. Experimental and numerical models involve biomechanical, hemodynamic and tribological approaches, including the modeling of nonlinear mechanical behavior of materials, specific fluid rheology, and issues of biological tissue/prosthesis/surgical tool contact.

INSA Lyon - Matéis
MATEIS is a laboratory dedicated to the description of elaboration-microstructure-properties relationships, using experimental and/or modeling approaches. MATEIS is active in the fields of advanced elaboration processes, microstructural characterization (often in situ and/or 3D), modeling at different scales, and characterization of usage properties. Multifunctional materials for health, energy, transport or construction are among our current concerns.
The team’s research activities focus is on : advanced materials elaboration processes, the characterization of microstructures at different scales, the relationships between microstructures and macroscopic behavior measured by various techniques (mechanical, physical, electrochemical…), and the evolution of materials in service and their interaction with the environment, as part of a holistic (systemic) approach.
The members of MATEIS involved in the ICELAND RHU are:
- Claire Gaillard, PhD – Lecturer
- Christelle Der-Loughian, PhD – Lecturer
- Sylvain Dancette, PhD – Lecturer
- Sandra Balvay, Research Engineer
INSA Lyon - LMFA
The Fluid Mechanics and Acoustics Laboratory (LMFA) develops a continuum of research in fluid mechanics and acoustics, from the understanding and the modelling of physical phenomena to applied research, in collaboration with industrial partners and public institutions.
Research is organized around 3 socio-ecocomic fields :
- Aeronautics and transportation
- Risk and Environment
- Energy and processes for industry and Health
Pascale Kulisa, PhD – Researcher, member of the team Complex Fluids and Transferts, is involved in the ICELAND RHU.
INSA Lyon - Ampère
The general aim of the research carried out at Ampère is to manage and use the energy in the systems rationally in relation to their environment.
Ampère was created in 2007 by merging the Centre de Génie Electrique de Lyon and the Laboratoire d’Automatique Industrielle de Lyon and including researchers specialised in environmental biology.
The laboratory has 3 scientific departments:
- Electrical energy: creating and optimising transport, distribution and conversion devices for electrical energy, taking into account their environments.
- Bioengineering: generating fundamental concepts, methods and applications in bioengineering by creating a synergy between electrical engineering, the science of microsystems and biology.
- Method for systems engineering: developing analysis and synthesis methods for controlled design, incorporating control restrictions, reliability and system monitoring for multi-physical systems in relation to their environment.
The team’s members of Ampère involved in ICELAND are :
- Arnaud Lélevé, PhD – Professor
- Richard Moreau, PhD – Lecturer
